Singer-songwriter Sarah Morris is no stranger to collaboration and connection—in fact it’s an integral part of her as an artist and as a person. Her new music video encapsulates that spirit—filmed by and featuring stalwarts of the Twin Cities music community—and gives an enticing sneak peek of a song from her new album Say Yes, which she’s releasing October 10 and celebrating with a show at the Dakota in downtown Minneapolis that same day.

The official studio single of “Yeah, Yeah” (which Sarah says she wrote “on a very bumpy car ride from Lutsen to Ely, MN, in June 2024”) will premiere this Sunday on The Current’s Radio Heartland morning show. But first, we’re honored to present the exclusive video premiere of this live performance rendition of “Yeah, Yeah”!

Eli Gardiner, a Minnesota-based singer-songwriter, videographer and mastermind behind our own North Country Song Sessions video series, created the video. Joining Sarah on acoustic guitar is Lars-Erik Larson, a familiar fixture in the Cities as an accomplished drummer and well-regarded for his work in rebuilding and tuning pianos.

“Lars has played drums in my band since 2014,” Sarah says. “He’s been known to play accordion for us, and whistle, too. But for the last year and a half, Lars has been saying yes to something new—playing guitar with me on the first Sunday of every month, in the corner of the bar at Waldmann Brewery in St. Paul. It’s an exceptionally sweet gig—completely unplugged, in the coziest of spots.”

On one such Sunday, they played “Yeah, Yeah,” which they’d just recorded with a full band at Pachyderm Studios for Sarah’s upcoming album. “I enjoyed the simplicity of the two guitars so much on this little summer love song,” she says. “I said ‘Ooh! We should record this! Just like this!’”

So one pre-shift Friday morning, Sarah and Lars set up in the Waldmann bar, and Eli beautifully captured their relaxed, stripped-down performance. The effortless melody spins out unhurriedly, carried by Sarah’s expressive voice and the intertwined notes of their acoustic guitars, lightly and expertly buoyant. The song’s lyrics are a playful response to a love confession, gently chiding but happily accepting at the same time:

You got a lot of nerve

The way you kept me waiting

Letting the spark burn to a fire blazing

Don’t they call it sweet anticipating?

Yeah, yeah I want

Yeah, yeah I do

Yeah, yeah I’d like to spend some time with you
