Los Angeles-based roots artist Destinie Lynn has a sound that can put you in an almost instantaneous hypnotic state. Her luscious voice ensnares your heart while her lyrics give you butterflies or goosebumps (or both), depending on the subject.
Lynn, who already has two EPs and handful of singles to her name, is releasing her debut full-length album in early 2026. The first single off the new record, “Shortnin’ Bread,” will be available to stream everywhere tomorrow, October 10, 2025, but we’re proud to present an exclusive premiere of it right here!
Her most recent EP, Little Ghost, had an appropriately brooding and atmospheric air for its theme. But Lynn changes it up with this new song, a bluesy banjo tune that plays off the classic American folk song of the same name, adding lighthearted lyrics with almost nursery-rhyme cadences and playfully sexy wordplay:
My baby’s got a likin’
For a little lightning
Strikin’ his bed
The short tune (just over 2 minutes) shimmies along on a foot-tapping, hip-swaying midtempo beat. Like a tasty snack, it makes you crave just one more listen (and then another). Amidst layers of warm, rich instrumentation and percussion, one of the most notable elements is banjo, which Lynn became especially interested in for its African roots. I haven’t often (if ever) thought of “banjo” and “sultry” in the same breath, but Destinie Lynn is here to prove they belong side by side with this sultry banjo-forward single.
“‘Shortnin’ Bread’ was originally just me and banjo,” she says. “I brought the song to my producer, Nick Bullock, and told him I was totally open to experiment and play around with instrumentation on this song, but I didn't have any specific ideas on what the end result would or should be. By the time the musicians and I finished recording, it had turned into something so cool and vibey. We were all (and still are) really stoked on it!”
