Angela Easterling’s upcoming album Songs from the Knoxville Project arrives this Friday, Sept 25. Inspired by a handwritten family account from the Civil War era, it traces the remarkable journey of Angela’s great-great-great-grandmother, who crossed the mountains from North Carolina to Knoxville with her 10 children in search of safety. Christine spoke with the South Carolina artist about this breathtaking story, what one mother’s personal account can teach us about our country’s history, the beautifully imagined songs it inspired, and Angela’s hope of one day bringing the work to the stage as a musical.
